Seminars
...building capacity through professional development
Seminars are offered on topics related to the educational needs of
students with special needs. Seminars are designed for students with
Autism Spectrum Disorder but many of the strategies are effective for
students with a variety of special needs.
Understanding
Autism
A hands-on approach to help you experience and appreciate the daily
challenges faced by students with ASD as explained by Dwayne on ABC TV's
Extreme Makeover, Home Edition, 2004. Learn the importance of
school-wide and community-based awareness to ensure that we are not
punishing students for having a disability.
Communication
Strategies
Explore the unique communication needs of students with ASD and the
important differences between communication and speech. Review avenues
that can facilitate speech at home and in the classroom. This seminar
includes examples of high-tech, low-tech, no-tech and low-cost
communication support systems.
- understand the
importance of scheduling
- become aware of assistive technology
- understand how students with ASD process incoming information
- adapt our techniques to increase the effectiveness of our
communication/interaction
Effective
and Meaningful Socialization
Develop ideas on how to facilitate (rather than impose)
socialization with other students in both home and school settings. We
will examine how to set-up successful peer relationships in the
community and classroom (including inclusion, mainstreaming, and reverse
inclusion situations.)
- develop
strategies for effective roles for educational assistants
- generate ideas for fostering socialization and independence
Instantly
Applicable Educational Strategies
A more focused look at education strategies: working with educators to
encourage a positive relationship, fostering understanding in an
inclusive classroom, and the need for a truly individual education plan.
This seminar includes universal strategies that are effective with all
students with special needs.
- understand vital
accommodation guidelines
- distinguish between accommodations and modifications
- practice making accommodations for curriculum
- gather ideas for fostering independence
Applications
of Positive Behaviour Support
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) offers a more effective way of dealing
with classroom
behaviours than behaviour management. The goal is to develop capacity in
the schools
and to empower staff to assess, design and implement strategies to
redirect undesirable
behaviours. This is a proactive, rather than reactive approach to
behaviour that looks at the learning environment instead of merely
blaming the student.
- understand the
philosophy and applications of positive behaviour supports (PBS)
- identify the differences between behaviour management and PBS
Fostering
Independence - the Educational Assistant's Role
True student success results from trained staff with a repertoire of
skills. This vital training
looks at developing the maximum potential of students with special needs
by explaining
how EA's could foster or hamper independence. This session offers ideas
on classroom
interactions, socialization, and appropriate communication.
- re-examine your
role as an Educational Assistant
- generate ideas for appropriate interaction and support in the
classroom
- develop strategies to increase student independence
- learn how to effectively collect accurate data
- create and maintain communication systems
Consultant
Skills - Consulting Without Insulting
This seminar explores the critical skills and approaches that are
essential to effectively
meet the needs of the schools we service. Even the best consultation
strategies will fall on
deaf ears if we do not appropriately adjust our approaches. This will
help assess the needs of each individual situation as well as the
appropriate approaches that should be applied.
We will also explore the common myths about teachers and ineffective
strategies to avoid.
